Fifty-five years of Russian radio-echo sounding investigations in Antarctica

Abstract: Russian (former Soviet) systematic studies of Antarctica by radio-echo sounding (RES) and ground-penetrating radar technique (GPR) were commenced in 1964. Since that time airborne RES surveys have covered about 5.5 × 106 km2 of the icy continent discovering remarkable geographic objects such as Subglacial Gamburtsev Mountains, and allowed studies of Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Amery Ice Shelf and Lambert Glacier. Ground-based investigations during the 1990s and 2000s revealed the structure of the Lake Vostok are… Show more

“…Other early surveys were also led by Russia, Germany, Iceland, Italy, China, and Canada (among others) across Antarctica and Greenland, as well as Iceland, Arctic Ice Caps, and mountain glaciers (e.g. Drewry, 1983; Bingham and Siegert, 2007; Björnsson, 2020; Popov, 2020). Planetary radar sounders have also been used, or are planned, to observe the subsurface and near-surface conditions of Mars, Earth's moon, comets and the icy moons of Jupiter (e.g.…”

“…Geophysical surveys of the coast of Princess Elizabeth Land (PEL) began in 1971, providing basic ice thickness, bed topography, and magnetic field data (Popov and Kiselev, 2018;Popov, 2020). Prior to our work, virtually no RES data had been acquired upstream of ∼ 300 km from the grounding line of PEL, however.…”

“…Since then, multiple efforts have been made to collect and compile RES data in order to expand the RES database across the continent (Lythe et al, 2001;Fretwell et al 2013). Russian glaciologists conducted the first geophysical exploration of the coast of Princess Elizabeth Land (PEL) between 1971-2016, providing basic ice thickness, bed topography and magnetic field data (Popov and Kiselev, 2018;Popov, 2020). To date, virtually no RES data have been acquired upstream of ~300 km from the grounding line of PEL.…”

“…In comparison with Bedmap2, the new DEM benefits from recently acquired airborne geophysical data collected by the ICECAP2 programme over four austral summer seasons from 2015 to 2019 ( Figure 1b). We use the Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) grounding line (Rignot et al, 2011) to delimit the ice-shelf facing margin of the ice sheet.…”
