“…As is common among spirotrichous ciliates (Dini and Nyberg ), Euplotes controls the specificity of its social interactions at a single mat locus of the transcriptionally silent germ‐line micronucleus, and expresses the multiple alleles of this locus in the transcriptionally active somatic macronucleus with the synthesis of the “mating‐type factors” that are responsible for the chemical specificity to each cell (mating) type.
