Final Safety Assessment of Coal Tar as Used in Cosmetics

Abstract: Coal Tar is a semisolid by-product obtained in the destructive distillation of bituminous coal, which functions in cosmetic products as a cosmetic biocide and denaturant--antidandruff agent is also listed as a function, but this is considered an over-the-counter (OTC) drug use. Coal Tar is a nearly black, viscous liquid, heavier than water, with a naphthalene-like odor and a sharp burning taste, produced in cooking ovens as a by-product in the manufacture of coke. Crude Coal Tar is composed of 48% hydrocarbons… Show more

“…36 Increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers in CCT-treated patients, with or without exposure to artificial UVR, has been noted in some but not all studies. 6,[36][37][38] Interpretation of epidemiological data is further complicated by the fact that most patients treated with GT also have been treated with other drugs, including known or suspected cutaneous carcinogens such as psoralen plus ultraviolet-A radiation, arsenic and methotrexate.…”

“…Coal tar, composed of 48% hydrocarbon, 42% carbon, and 10% water, has been a psoriasis treatment for hundreds of years. 9 Its proposed mechanism of action is by activating AhRs; carbazole, an aryl hydrocarbon in coal tar, may have anti-inflammatory effects by reducing levels of IL-17 and modulating IL-2 inhibition on T helper 17 (TH17) cells. 10 Adherence to coal tar may be limited because of its strong odor and tendency to stain clothing.…”
