Financial Feasibility and Competitiveness Levels of Soybean Varieties in Rice-Based Cropping System of Indonesia

Abstract: This research was conducted to determine the financial feasibility of growing soybean varieties and their competitiveness in the rice-based cropping system of Indonesia. The research was conducted at two locations in 2020. The results showed that the use of improved varieties of soybean yielded 2.24 t/ha and 2.09 t/ha, which was higher than using local (non-improved) varieties. The use of improved varieties was financially feasible with Revenue Cost (R/C) ratios of 1.88–1.98 and Benefit Cost (B/C) ratios of 0.… Show more

“…The Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) noted that to increase national soybean production, the role of improved varieties cannot be separated. Improved varieties have a strategic role as a means of carrying new technologies' advantages, including: (1) high yield, (2) resistance to pests and diseases to support cropping system and integrated pest control, (3) early maturity age to increase cropping index, and (4) superior yield which meets the users' demands and needs [13,14] Therefore, in order to increase national soybean production, it is necessary to provide adequate seeds of improved soybean varieties, comprehensively design of soybean productivity improvement program, and focused on potential lands which can increase soybean productivity more than the average national production.…”

“…In 2017, global soybean cultivation required 131 million hectares of land [7]. Meanwhile, one of the causes of the shortage of soybean products in Indonesia is the reluctance of farmers to plant because the production is low, making it economically unprofitable [8]. So that soybean cultivation has a higher economic value, efforts are needed to increase productivity without increasing the land area and maintenance costs.…”
