Energy research itself is changing due to digitalization and the trend to open science. While this change enables new research, it also increases the amount of, and need for, available data and models. Therefore, a platform for open digital energy research and development is required to support researchers and practitioners with their new needs and to enable FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) research data management in energy research. We present a functional and technological concept for such a platform based on six elements: Competence to enable researchers and practitioners to find suitable partners for their projects, Methods to give an overview on the diverse possible research methods within energy research, Repository to support finding data and models for simulation of energy systems, Simulation to couple these models and data to create user-defined simulation scenarios, Transparency to publish results and other content relevant for the different stakeholder in energy research, and Core to interconnect all elements and to offer a unified entry point. We discuss the envisioned use of the outlined platform with use cases addressing three relevant stakeholder groups.

The so-called Energiewende is a complex task with a variety of stakeholders, regulations, technical infrastructure, and proposed solutions. Buildings are an important sector for increasing resource and energy efficiency, as in Germany around 35 % of end energy usage can be attributed to them. Digital applications can help reduce these emissions through more efficient planning, operating, renovation, or demolition. Depending on the task and the parties involved, the complexity of descriptions and data models can vary from simple energy efficiency labels used in the labeling process of buildings to complex individual data models used for simulation. However, these specific information systems are often non-transferable, are hard to compare in their restrictions and requirements, and hence increase the overall costs of digital solutions. A good understanding is needed to preserve economic and ecological benefits while maintaining privacy and security aspects. To compare digital applications a variety of solutions are identified, namely frameworks, taxonomies, and ontologies. While Frameworks focus more on technological aspects and are complex to use, they provide an in-depth understanding. Taxonomies can be used for a less infrastructure-dependent comparison and provide simple relationships. Ontologies provide relationships and definitions while being task-dependent. We conclude that comparing the underlying data models of digital applications is a complex task and dependent on the application and its infrastructure. However, a variety of tasks refers to the same tools and data. After discussing these approaches, we then give an overview of digital applications developed by German researchers. Last we give an insight on how to combine these aspects in our ongoing research. To summarize, in this paper we give an overview of the complexity involved in transferring digital solutions in the building sector, provide a method used for comparing applications and describe a solution to compare infrastructure and digital tools built for it.

District energy management systems (DEMS) offer the capability to harness the energy potential of districts. Currently, there is a lack of research describing the necessary underlying information systems. An overview of lessons learned is presented from a series of workshops with experts from industry, research, and further roles, predominately from Germany. Seven workshops discussing challenges within digitalization, data requirements, district energy system planning, common elements in district energy systems are conducted, ensuring long‐term operation and transferability, and validation of prior findings. Based on these discussions, insights into topics such as the key data and its requirements, typical distinctions in DEMS, their infrastructure, considerations in the information modeling, as well as challenges in data availability, are offered. These findings are mapped to a data value pipeline, illustrating key resources and tools needed to plan and operate DEMS. As demonstrated in this article, the requirements for DEMS highlight their complexity. Distinct categorizations, such as the ownership or heterogeneity in building and technologies, form the landscape of DEMS. The need for standardized, interoperable systems is often a contrast to the uniqueness of individual systems and their needs. Further adoption of the described concepts necessitates sustainable business models.
