Finding Fellowship in Neurology Fellowship Recruitment

Abstract

Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic diseases have led to the growth of many subspecialties. There are >2 dozen types of subspecialty fellowship training programs for graduates of neurology residency. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is the single accrediting organization for residency programs, but fellowship programs are accredited by multiple bodies, including the ACGME and the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties, and some programs are not accredited at all. In addition, fellowship programs compete for the same resident pool, and until recently, uniformity in the application process has been lacking. One consequence of the lack of organization is that the recruitment timeline for many fellowships has crept earlier, with some recruiting in the early or middle of the PGY-3 year.
