Finding the Right Balance: A Social Norms Intervention to Reduce Heavy Drinking in University Students

Abstract: Introduction: Heavy alcohol consumption constitutes a major health risk among University students. Social relationships with peers strongly affect University students' perception of the drinking behavior of others, which in turn plays a crucial role in determining their own alcohol intake. University students tend to overestimate their peers' alcohol consumption – a belief that is associated with an increase in an individual's own consumption. Therefore, we implemented a social norms intervention with personal… Show more

“…The results should be interpreted with caution, as the sample of heavy binge drinker was rather small, and other known associations, such as gender and age, were not found. However, heavy binge drinking in university students is a known problem and based on previous findings, it becomes clear that successful interventions must address perceived social norms among university students in relation to binge drinking ( 41 , 43 ).…”

“…This work has identified alcohol social norms and cognitive behavioural skills as significant mediators in contrast with a recent systematic review, which only found social norms mediating alcohol consumption among college students (Reid & Carey, 2015 ). This could be because this population tends to overrepresent alcohol consumption among their peers, a belief that is associated with an increase in an individual's own consumption (Lin et al, 2022 ; Wolter et al, 2021 ). Therefore, these results suggest that alcohol social norms and cognitive behavioural skills are important active ingredients in reducing drinking among college students.…”
