Findings from the National Memory Screening Day Program

Abstract: Screening for cognitive impairment in community settings yielded results consistent with expected effects of age and education. The event attracted a large proportion of individuals with memory concerns; 88.1% were told that they did not have memory problems detectible with the tests used. Further studies are needed to assess how participants respond to and use screening information, whether this information ultimately influences decision-making or outcomes, and whether memory screening programs outside health… Show more

“…An important area is the use of memory testing to screen for clinically significant impairment of cognitive function, potentially indicative of dementia and AD [6,31,[50][51][52]. The CCRT presented here can be done in a short amount of time, provides two important metrics of memory performance, incorrect percentage and recognition time, and has minimal cost.…”

“…Findings using CRTs suggest that there could be a potentially important role for online CCRTs for testing subjects for clinical and research purposes, as well as for screening and monitoring memory encoding. Further, such testing could be used in the dementia and AD fields as a screening and assessment measure to initiate dementia assessment and diagnostic tests and contribute to the determination of the severity of the cognitive impairment [31], leading to estimation of severity of the underlying pathology as well as the social dysfunction [10], and thereby guide clinician care [32]. And a quick, precise, widely available, and inexpensive test could have widespread applications for any area in which memory function is a concern, but particularly in the field of AD.…”

“…However, the systematic review included only studies utilizing diagnostic assessment, and the main pool of data had only two inclusive studies from the Middle East/African region. Nonetheless, another study reported a prevalence of 14.7% of probable cognitive impairment or dementia using the MINI-Cog in a community setting [30]. As mentioned earlier, prevalence rates of dementia and cognitive impairment in the ME are lacking, and there is an apparent need for research in this area.…”

“…Increasing concern over AD has prompted a demand for quick and effective ways to screen for memory loss and cognitive decline in large numbers of individuals in the community. To address this demand, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America initiated an annual National Memory Screening Day to encourage clinicians/researchers nationwide to offer free memory screening to the public on a speci ed day each year [4]. These events are generally aimed at those over the age of with concern about their memory and involve brief cognitive testing with feedback that either reassures the participant of normal function or informs them of a potential problem and the need to consult their usual healthcare provider for further evaluation.…”
