“…We report a novel training program for caregiver navigators that builds general and protocol-specific content and skills [ 10 , 21 ] in key competencies [ 12 ] using multiple strategies, ranging from traditional didactics to interview-based learning to role-playing. Based on adult learning theories [ 29 ], our training encouraged self-reflection and allowed navigators to direct their own learning to meet their specific needs, while scaffolded by the research team.…”

“…16 The review by the National Navigation Roundtable Workforce Development Task Force also emphasizes the need for training for all levels of PN training (licensed or nonlicensed) as well as training that can target particular aspects of patient navigation. 13 As the oncology PN role continues to expand and becomes integrated into the healthcare team, evidence-based training for PNs is needed to reduce variation in practice, clarify role expectations, and support professional development. 6,13 Our findings can be used to clarify the role of the PN and serve as an evidence-based foundation to develop and test training curriculum for PNs in interpersonal communication and guide evaluation of patient navigation programs.…”

The need for training for PNs revolves around the same premise for creating patient navigation programs: continuing to promote positive cancer care outcomes and reduce cancer care disparities by eliminating barriers to care and facilitating timely delivery of services.…”
