Fine Dust Creation during Hardwood Machine Sanding

Abstract: Wood dust generated during woodworking—particularly from hardwood species during sanding—poses a health and safety hazard to workers in the wood industry. This study aimed to determine the particle-size distribution of selected hardwood species and the content of fine particles in dust created during machine sanding, which pose the highest health and safety hazards in the woodworking industry. Six hardwood species were studied: black alder, European ash, common walnut, pedunculate oak, hornbeam, and European b… Show more

“…A belt speed of 14.5 m/s and a pressure of 0.65 N/cm 2 were applied. The wood sanding parameters were identical to those in earlier publications (Pędzik et al 2020;Sydor et al 2021;Pędzik et al 2021). Planks with a width equal to the width of the belt were used.…”

“…In its transformation from nature to its final use, it undergoes a large number of processes that it is necessary to know about in order to be aware of the possible dangers they may involve. Mechanical work such as wood sanding is an essential part of product manufacturing and during this process a large amount of dust is generated and deposited on floors, walls and surfaces in the working facilities (Pędzik et al, 2021).…”

“…These pollutants pose a very serious threat to human health. Wood dust is one of the most dangerous pathogens found inside factories processing wood materials [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. The dimensions of the dust particles and their properties are conducive to long-term floating in the air, which is a very serious exposure for people staying in it as the exposure is a harmful factor to the human body.…”
