“…In cases of doubt, immunocytochemistry for cytokeratin, S-100 protein and smooth muscle actin are helpful in differentiating schwannoma from pleomorphic adenoma, because the former are positive only for S-100 protein. 1,5 In our case, we also encountered 2 types of areas, cellular and hypocellular, which aided in our cytologic diagnosis.…”

“…We read with interest the report by Sng et al 1 on the comparison of Cytospin and ThinPrep processing of urinary cytology, published in Acta Cytologica. We have compared ThinPrep to the membrane filter preparation method currently in use in our laboratory for urinary cytology, and we have come to conclusions similar to those of Sng et al 1 ThinPrep was applied to 47 urinary specimens (22 voided urine, 10 bladder washings and 15 bladder urine) submitted fresh to the Department of Clinical Cytology and Pathology, Malmö University Hospital, and its diagnostic performance and the effect on diagnostic criteria were compared to membrane (PCTE MEMB) filter (Millipore/NovAseptic AB, SE-449 34, Nödinge, Sweden) preparations.…”

“…The literature search revealed few cases of histologically proven schwannomas in which FNA was attempted,[ 4 ] out of which only some could be diagnosed preoperatively, and a very small proportion of cases out of those were diagnosed as benign nerve sheath tumor. The cytological differential diagnoses (D/D) of schwannoma include other closely mimicking spindle cell tumors.…”

“…MRI is optimal in detecting facial nerve schwannomas compared to CT scan 8,9 . Fine needle aspiration cytology is unreliable in making diagnosis intraparotid facial schwannomas 10,11 . In most cases the diagnosis is made intra-operatively when the surgeon finds difficulty in locating facial nerve 7 .…”
