Fine-needle aspiration cytology of chondroid syringoma of fore arm: Report of a rare case

Abstract: Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign adnexal tumor of sweat glands with microscopic resemblance to the salivary gland pleomorphic adenoma. Cytology is rarely utilized for preoperative assessment of these slow-growing, small, nodular lesions. Definitive cytological diagnosis is also quite difficult, and majority of the aspirates are evaluated as benign adnexal tumors leading to mandatory histopathological examination for pinpoint diagnosis. Here, we report a case of chondroid syringoma of forearm, which was dia… Show more

“…However reports of cases lacking chondroid differentiation and rather myxoid material is documented in literature. 7,8 Thus it can show broad morphologic patterns, knowledge of which helps prevent potential misdiagnosis. 9,10 Accurate diagnosis of skin tumors is difficult.…”

“…A skin tumor containing both epithelial and mesenchymal components is believed to have been first described by Nasse et al Hirsch and Helwig first used the term “chondroid syringoma” in 1961(widely replacing the term mixed tumor of the skin) because of the presence of sweat gland elements set in cartilaginous stroma . CSs are defined as benign adnexal tumors containing both epithelial and mesenchymal elements with histological resemblance to benign mixed tumors of salivary glands (pleomorphic adenoma) . The tumor is rare among primary skin tumors with an incidence as low as 0.01–0.098% …”

“…CS most commonly presents as a painless, firm, nodular, subcutaneous, or dermal mass of 0.5–3 cm in diameter with a male predilection . CS usually arises in the head and neck region (particularly the cheek, nose, and lip), though cases involving the trunk, extremities, axilla, abdomen, penis, vulva, and scrotal areas have been reported . Clinically, CS is often mistaken for other types of skin lesions such as dermoid cyst, sebaceous cyst, neurofibroma, dermatofibroma, pilomatricoma, lipoma, basal cell carcinoma, and seborrheic keratosis …”

“…3 Cytological features of chondroid syringoma have been published seldom in the literature. 3,4 Morphologically, it is similar to pleomorphic adenoma. Here, we are reporting the cytology of rare case of chondroid syringoma of nose in a 61-year-old male.…”
