Fine‐needle aspiration (FNA) and pleural fluid cytology diagnosis of benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in the lung: A case report and review of literature

Abstract: Lesions that contain abundant benign myoepithelial cells, including pleomorphic adenomas of salivary gland origin, may present a diagnostic challenge in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. Benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma is a rare neoplasm, in which the benign appearing pleomorphic adenoma, without any histological evidence of malignancy, metastasizes to distant sites including lung. In the absence of clinical history of a pre-existing myoepithelial neoplasm, the presence of myoepithelial cells in… Show more

“…On the other hand, tumor cells of myoepithelial carcinoma appear not as ball‐like clusters, but rather as 3 D tight clusters with high cellularity in the pleural effusion . Benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma in the pleural effusion contained small numbers of ball‐like clusters in a background of isolated tumor cells . Since the ball‐like structures of these carcinomas are similar in the pleural effusion, careful attention is required to achieve a correct diagnosis (Table ).…”

“…Occasional case reports exist of adenoid cystic carcinoma metastasizing to the pleural fluid,[91011] as well as a rare case of benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma[12] and a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma involving peritoneal and pericardial fluid. [913] However, this appears to be the first case report of metastatic SDC in pleural fluid.…”

“…FNA has been demonstrated to be an accurate, rapid, minimally invasive and cost‐effective technique for the cytological diagnosis of mass lesions in various organs and tissues. Many reviews on this topic are present in the literature, and in Table 1 we have summarized the most recent and significant ones 3–43.…”
