Fine-needle aspiration washout in the diagnosis of cystic parathyroid adenoma

Abstract: Cystic parathyroid adenomas are one of the rare causes of neck masses. Due to its rarity, it causes misdiagnosis and wrong treatments and has undesirable consequences. The measurement of parathyroid hormone in fine-needle aspiration washout fluid is a minimally invasive, safe method for the diagnosis of parathyroid cysts and seems to be more useful than Tc-99m sestamibi (MIBI) parathyroid single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT.

“…By ultrasound, a PA is usually seen as a round or oval well-defined, hypoechogenic structure delineated by an echogenic line and contrasting with the overlying hyperechogenic thyroid tissue. Calcifications and cysts may be found in larger parathyroid adenomas [ 13 ]. Ultrasound is most useful in identifying parathyroid adenomas close to the thyroid gland or the upper cervical portion of the thymus.…”

“…Cystic parathyroid adenoma, which can be functional or nonfunctional, is also a very rare pathology of the parathyroid glands [ 3 , 4 ]. Moreover, functional ones compose only around 10% out of 0.01% of neck masses [3] .…”
