Fine needle biopsy with cytology in paediatrics: the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the role of ancillary techniques

Abstract: Fine needle biopsy (FNB) with cytology has long been regarded as an excellent technique as the first choice for diagnosing adult tumours. Being an inexpensive minimally invasive technique with high accuracy and diagnostic immediacy through rapid on-site evaluation, it is also ideal for implementation in the paediatric setting, particularly in developing countries. Furthermore, it allows complementary and advanced procedures such as flow cytometry, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or fluorescence in situ hybridi… Show more

“…FNAC is widely used for the preoperative diagnosis of salivary gland masses in adult patients, with sensitivity and specificity values ranging from 0.74 to 0.88 and from 0.87 to 0.98, respectively . However, its value in the pediatric population is not well established and needs further study . Apart from this, the lack of clinical confidence in the application of FNAC to pediatric patients is probably because of other factors, such as poor compliance of children with the subsequent risk of sampling errors, the need to sedate these patients, the need of an experienced cytopathologist, and the fear of complications .…”
