“…The morphology of follicles in Peyer's patches is quite comparable to that of the appendix (KIMURA,1977;ABE andITO,1978: LAUSE andBocKMAN,1981). This correlates quite well with evidence for a similar handling for luminal antigens.…”

“…Macrophages are a major component of the intestinal lamina propria (8, 16) but have only rarely been recognized in the epithelium (6,7). Macrophages within the germinal centers contain tangible bodies consisting of condensed nuclei of lymphocytes and other debris in phagosomes (1,17). In both normal and nude mice, the characteristic cytoskeletal remains of the G. muris allowed us to identify the source of phagosome material, which usually is not identiflable.…”

“…Below the epithelium, B cells and T helper cells in large numbers formed a cellular meshwork through which transported antigen would have to pass. This meshwork also contained macrophages (previously characterized by enzyme cytochemistry and electron microscopy [Abe and Ito, 1978a;LeFevre et al, 197911, and Ia+ cells with dendritic morphology.…”

“…B220 is a cell surface antigen found on pre-B cells, small and large B lymphocytes, and some plasma cells (Coffman, 1982); therefore, some B220 + cells may be plasma cells or large lymphocytes which have been found in the dome by histologic and electron microscopic techniques (Abe and Ito, 1978). Presumably, most B220 + cells are small lymphocytes bearing surface Ig since the labeling pattern of B220+ cells in the dome is similar to that of small lymphocytes in the follicle, and since small lymphocytes are common in the dome (Abe and Ito, 1978a). Whether the small lymphocytes possess surface IgG, IgM, or IgA was not determined.…”
