Fine structure of the ventral and dorsal lobes of the prostate in the young adult syrian hamster, Mesocricetus auratus

Abstract: The normal ventral and dorsal prostatic lobes of the young adult Syrian hamster were examined at the light and electron microscopic levels. Each lobe is composed of branched tubular secretory units separated from each other by loose interacinar connective tissue and draining into the urethra. The lumen of each acinus is lined by a simple epithelium composed of columnar secretory cells with occasional small basal cells. The epithelial layer, with the thin underlying lamina propria, forms a mucosa that is often … Show more

“…Whole mounts of hamster prostate glands reveal that a similar situation exists in the hamster dorsal (but not ventral) lobe (unpublished obser¬ vations). In the dorsal lobe ofthe prostate, distended tubules empty into the urethra and, although secretory in nature (Toma & Buzzell, 1988), their main role is to collect and store secretion produced in the folded tubules and to pass this secretion on to the urethra. These distinctions were not apparent in the ventral lobes ofthe hamster prostate (Toma & Buzzell, 1988).…”

“…Distended tubules were judged to have no mucosal folds which projected more than halfway to the centre of the tubule. This degree of folding and distension was not apparent in the ventral lobe (Toma & Buzzell, 1988), and so, in this gland, all tubules were treated alike. The tracings were then measured on a digitizing pad.…”

“…Finasteride is used for treatment of BPH in men in a 5mg dose daily 15 . The prostate stroma of hMa is composed of loose connective tissue where the prostatic acinous are attached 10 . In men, the prostate stroma is rich in fibermuscular tissue.…”

“…The anatomy, histology and physiology of the prostate of the hamster -Mesocricetus auratus (HMA) -were described by Toma et al 5 , allowing the realization of experiments with these animals with medications that can act in this gland.…”
