Finite element analysis of a ring type ultrasonic motor

Abstract: In this paper, a finite element method to simulate the overall behavior of ultrasonic motor (USM) is proposed. Firstly, an iterative algorithm using ABAQUS ® version 6.4 to solve the contact problem with piezoelectric actuation is presented. In each iteration, the dynamic responses of stator actuated by piezoelectric force and updated contact force are solved, from which static (or steady state) contact between deformed stator and rotor are estimated. For the dynamics of stator, three dimensional solid element… Show more

“…Piezoelectric ceramic is a smart material that has elastic constants, piezoelectric constants, and permittivity constants. The damping ratio was set to 0.8% and the driving voltage was set to 100 V pp [24,25]. The working mode of the finite element method (FEM) simulation is shown in Figure 4a.…”

“…Besides the abovementioned eight measured variables, the contact parameters, such as contact pressure and contact area in the stator and rotor interface, are investigated using numerical procedures for analysis of overall behavior of USM presented in [26,43]. Here, the outline of this numerical procedure is introduced.…”

“…Using the setup described in [26], steady-state motor performance is measured under carefully controlled conditions. Parametric studies on varying drive frequency and voltage, and the effect of contact layer have been studied in [43,29,30,50,22]. This paper focused mainly on the performance of USM with different wavenumbers.…”
