Finite Element Analysis of Biot’s Consolidation with a Coupled Nonlinear Flow Model

Abstract: A nonlinear flow relationship, which assumes that the fluid flow in the soil skeleton obeys the Hansbo non-Darcian flow and that the coefficient of permeability changes with void ratio, was incorporated into Biot’s general consolidation theory for a consolidation simulation of normally consolidated soft ground with or without vertical drains. The governing equations with the coupled nonlinear flow model were presented first for the force equilibrium condition and then for the continuity condition. Based on the… Show more

“…The physical properties of Wenzhou clay are listed in Table 1. (1) Mesh Division Several studies on finite element meshing of consolidation by vertical drain have been conducted by various scholars, such as Xie, Chen, and Deng [19][20][21][22]. From their findings, two essential conclusions can be drawn.…”

“…Firstly, the horizontal element size of the soil surrounding the vertical drain has a significant impact on the level of consolidation achieved-larger horizontal elements result in faster consolidation. Secondly, to obtain (1) Mesh Division Several studies on finite element meshing of consolidation by vertical drain have been conducted by various scholars, such as Xie, Chen, and Deng [19][20][21][22]. “…Moreover, Kianfar et al presented a radial consolidation model with the consideration of non‐Darcian flow and the effects of vacuum preloading. Deng et al incorporated non‐Darcian flow into Biot's general consolidation theory for a consolidation simulation of normally consolidated soft ground. Mishra and Patra developed a one‐dimensional small strain consolidation equation in terms of excess pore pressure and obtained the corresponding numerical solution with FEM.…”
