Finite Element Analysis of Maximum Electric Field for Air Breakdown under Various Electrode Configurations

Abstract: <p>This paper describes the electric field behavior of air breakdown under various electrode configurations and gap length. By using COMSOL Multiphysics, a Finite Element Method (FEM) software, the values of maximum electric field can be determined based on the air breakdown voltage data obtained from the experiment under AC stress. The results show that R0.5-plane configuration provides a very high electric field upon breakdown, compared to R6-plane, R48-plane and plane-plane configurations. In addition… Show more

“…Figure 5 shows the field efficiency factor of R0.5-plane and R6-plane electrode configurations at a pressure of 0.11 MPa and various gap distances. The field efficiency factor, η is calculated using (2), where the average electric field, Emean for both electrode configurations are calculated using (3), while the maximum electric field, Emax for R0.5-plane and R6-plane configurations are calculated using ( 4) and ( 5), respectively [25]. To note, 𝑑 is the gap distance TELKOMNIKA ISSN: 1693-6930 ◼ between high voltage and ground electrodes, while 𝑟 is the tip radius of the high voltage electrode.…”

“…The GWP of SF6 is 23900 times that greater than of CO2 [3]. At present, previous researchers have been giving intense efforts to find an environmental-friendly gas such as air [4] and CO2 [5] to substitutes SF6. CO2 is a relatively good interruption performance and much lower GWP than SF6.…”
