Finite Element Analysis of the Deformation Distribution During Multi-Pass Rotary-Die ECAP

Abstract: Rotary-die equal channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) is a specially designed continuous processing technique to prepare bulk ultrafine-grained/nanostructure (UFG/NS) materials. In this article, an Al-7wt.% Si-0.35wt.% Mg alloy was processed by up to four RD-ECAP passes. The deformation behavior was studied by experiments and FEM simulation, including the observation of the scribed deformation patterns, the macrostructures, the simulated flow lines feature, and the equivalent stain distribution after different R… Show more

“…Thereafter, a home-made rotary-die ECAP (RD-ECAP) was employed on these samples at 573 K for 6 passes, followed by quickly cooling in water. The operation principle of RD-ECAP can be found in the supplementary material and our earlier work [20,21]. Prior to RD-ECAP, the sample and die were held at 573 K for 15 min together.…”

“…The as-cast AZ91 alloy was firstly cut into billets with dimension of 20 mm × 20 mm × 45 mm. The rotary-die (RD) ECAP device [19,20] which had two crossed channels with a square section at 90 • was adopted for ECAP. Before ECAP processing, the sample was firstly solution heat-treated (SHT) at 430 • C for 20 h and quenched in water to the room-temperature.…”

“…ECAP has been analyzed by different methods including analytical modeling of material flow, upper-bound analysis, and FEM simulation [11]. Wherein, FEM is one of the common numerical methods that have been used to explain the deformation process during the ECAP processes [12][13].…”
