This research addresses environmental concerns by exploring environmentally friendly composite materials as substitutes for non-biodegradable synthetic fibers. The study proposes the development of polymer matrix composites reinforced with natural fique fibers, sourced from a plant cultivated in Colombia. A BioPoxy 36 polymer matrix with a high carbon content was used and reinforced with fique fabric using the vacuum-assisted lamination method. To improve the adhesion between the fibers and the matrix, an alkaline chemical treatment was applied to the fiber using 2% sodium hydroxide by weight. Mechanical properties were assessed through ASTM D3039 tensile and ASTM D3479 fatigue tests. A fractographic analysis was also conducted to identify the different modes of failure present. In terms of material degradation, distinct stages were observed, characterized by stiffness loss and loss factor indicators. The Coffin-Manson model was used to obtain the strain life curve for R = 0.1, using these factors as criteria. The static properties of the composite reinforced with fique fibers indicate an increase of 45% in ultimate strength, 145% in strain, and 27% in Young's modulus compared to the unreinforced matrix. In terms of dynamic properties, the elastic modulus showed a maximum variation of up to 7.88%. Electron microscopy reveals the failure mechanism, a distinct separation between the matrix and the fiber can be observed as a result of mechanical stress. The analysis reveals the brittle fracture of the hard fique fiber and some matrix separation, as well as possible fractured bubbles that may have occurred during the manufacturing process.

The high content of clay minerals within the soil has a significant effect on its engineering behavior; water affects the interaction of their minerals, which influences their plasticity and deformability. Structures made with or on plastic materials can experience problems due to the high deformations presented in soil. Therefore, decreasing the deformability of plastic soils contributes to the stability and serviceability of the structures supported by this kind of soils. This investigation is about the effect of fique fibers contents in the mechanical behavior of a plastic soil based on a kaolinitetype clay. Fique fiber is natural fiber from Colombia. Soil with additions of 0.0 wt%, 0.2 wt%, 0.7 wt%, and 1.0 wt% of fique fibers was fabricated. The goals by adding the fibers are to increase the compressive strength of the soil and to add a green reinforcement to the soil targeting a circular economy solution. Density, optimal water content, and unconfined compression tests were conducted. The microstructure was characterized with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Results showed that fique fibers improved not only the compressive strength by almost three times for sample with 1.0 wt% of fibers with respect to the reference soil without fibers but also the ductility increased.

Natural fibres have proven to be a potential alternative to replace synthetic fibres in some composite materials applications. However, drawbacks such as impregnation difficulties and the poor fibre–matrix interface limit the use of natural fibres in high-performance applications. This work proposes using an acrylic resin to coat the fibre surface to enhance the interfacial compatibility among fique fibres and polyester resin. Pull-out tests revealed an improvement in the interfacial shear strength of about 110% for coated fibres. Furthermore, nanoindentation test, Micro Raman spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy indicated that the acrylic resin eliminates the gap at the fibre/matrix interface seen in the uncoated fibres. Observed behaviour could be attributed to a better chemical bonding between the fibre and matrix and is also hypothesised that the elastic characteristic of the coating helps to transfer loads effectively from the matrix to the fibre.
