Firm Performance and Corporate Social Responsibility: Spatial Context and Effect Mechanism

Abstract: This study investigates the effect of firm performance on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a specific spatial context. The results for a sample of 1,557 listed companies in China suggest that a firm’s CSR performance level is influenced by that of nearby firms. This study also confirms the indirect link between financial and CSR performance through the mediating role of institutional and executive shareholding rates. In addition, the empirical evidence in this study not only supports the spatial contex… Show more

“…Studies in the fields of strategy and management followed Freeman's (1984) stakeholder theory and has been increasingly focusing on examining how CSR contributes to the creation of strategies that enable firms to achieve the objectives of critical stakeholders and improve their overall performance (Gu, 2023; Laplume et al, 2008; Sharma et al, 2023). By understanding the need to implement CSR initiatives, firms can develop suitable strategies to sustain their competitive advantage (Bridoux & Stoelhorst, 2022).…”

“…The significance of the present study is valuable because of the large sample size and longer period of time as compared to the previous studies in the same area of expertise. Therefore, the study contributes a considerable amount of quality literature in order to benefit the researchers, students, policymakers, board of directors, and other stakeholders to make better decisions for a better and safe future (Gu, 2023).…”

“…Moran's I values near 1 denote a distributed concentration, whereas I values near + 1 denote a clustered concentration and, when I value is zero, a randomly distributed concentration (Khosravi et al 2018). An indication of the presence of the spatial autocorrelation is a statistically substantial Moran's I (p < 0.01) that leads to the denial of the null hypothesis (the arsenic level is randomly dispersed) and indicates the existence of spatial autocorrelation (Gu 2023;Xia et al 2022;Waldhör 1996) and is de ned by:…”
