“…We have recently iden- tified the first case of HFRS in Germany caused by DOB virus. 19 Our data show a geographically varied distribution of at least three hantaviruses in Slovakia. We have demonstrated the circulation of DOB virus in A. agrarius, as well as the occurrence of human DOB virus infections in this part of Europe.…”

“…Dozens of HFRS patients with DOBV infection have been diagnosed by typing their neutralizing antibodies, and the clinical parameters of these patients have been well characterized; in contrast to the situation in South-East Europe, HFRS cases caused by DOBV infection in Central Europe appear mostly mild or moderate, and no fatalities have been observed yet. On the other side, pulmonary involvement-sometimes even with life-threatening severity-was observed in a number of cases (26,27,48,49,51). Direct evidence for a causal role of DOBV-Aa in Central European HFRS cases was provided by amplification of a DOBV-Aa nucleotide sequence from an HFRS patient in Germany (16).…”

“…In Germany two different serotypes of hantaviruses are known to be endemic. The predominant virus is PUU virus, mainly found in southwest Germany, which is carried by the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) ( (12,16). In this part of Germany, DOB virus is found in Apodemus agrarius and seems to be less pathogenic to humans than Apodemus flavicollisderived DOB virus which is found in the Balkans (16).…”
