Abstract:The two-stage L-band EDFA with partial double-pass (DP) system is compared with the full DP system. The partial DP system has a higher gain and lower noise figure at small input signal power compared with the full DP system. The small signal gain and noise figure are obtained at about 31.2 dB and 6.2 dB, respectively, for the partial DP system. The reduction of gain in full DP system is due to the double-propagation of conventionalband amplified spontaneous emission in the short length erbiumdoped fiber at the first stage that causes gain-clamping effect to the system. The higher gain in the partial DP system contributes to the lower noise figure even compared with single-pass twostage system at small input signal powers. However, at high input signal powers, the lowest noise figure is observed for the singlepass system.

Gain clamping in double-pass long-wavelength band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (L-band EDFA) is demonstrated using a ring resonator. This new design provides an improved gain characteristics as well as an efficient tune-ability. The gain is clamped at 11.5 dB with gain variation of less than 0.1 dB from input signal power of -40 to -6 dBm by setting the variable attenuation setting (VOA) at 8 dB. Also, the clamped-gain level can be controlled in the range from 4.7 to 20.9 dB by varying the VOA settings from 0 to 20 dB. However, the proposed gain-clamped amplifier suffers noise figure degradation as compared to open-ring amplifier due to the intense ring laser light, which counter-propagating through the EDF.

A new double-pass long-wavelength-band erbiumdoped fiber amplifier with enhanced noise figure characteristics is demonstrated by adding a short length of forward pumped erbiumdoped fiber (EDF) in front of the double-pass amplifier. By adding 7 m of EDF, the amplifier achieves a flat-gain output at about 34.2 dB with a gain variation of less than 1.3 dB at the wavelength region 1568 -1598 nm. The corresponding noise figures vary from 5.0 to 5.7 dB, which is improved by 1.7 to 7.5 dB over the flat-gain region, as compared to that of the conventional double-pass amplifier. This new amplifier with high gain and low noise figure can be useful as an inline amplifier in a wavelength division multiplexing transmission system.
