Three Odontaspis ferox (confirmed by mtDNA barcoding) were found in the English Channel and Celtic Sea in 2023 at Lepe, UK (50.7846, ‐1.3508), Kilmore Quay, Ireland (52.1714, ‐6.5937) and Lyme Bay, UK (50.6448, ‐2.9302). These are the first records of O. ferox in either country, and extend the species’ range by over three degrees of latitude, to >52°N. They were ~275 (female), 433 (female), and 293 cm (male) total length, respectively. These continue a series of new records, possibly indicative of a climate change induced shift in the species’ range.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

“…R. longurio can also be distinguished from other Rhizoprionodon species morphologically since it has a relatively high tooth count, particularly elongated rostrum, characteristic upper labial furrow length and an absence of gyandric heterodonty (sexual dimorphism in dentition) (Springer, 1964). No existing studies expand on the potential for sexual dimorphism in R. longurio despite the abundance of sex-based morphological differences in other sharks and their potentially significant ecological and behavioural implications (Ritter & Amin, 2019;Whitehead et al, 2022). A lack of dental sexual dimorphism may suggest that sexual conflict is relatively weak compared with other elasmobranchs, however the absence of dental sexual dimorphism alone is insufficient to confirm this (Gayford, 2023).…”

Amidst global declines in elasmobranch populations resulting predominantly from overfishing, the need to gather data regarding shark ecology is greater than ever. Many species remain data deficient or at risk of going extinct before sufficient conservation measures can be applied. In this review, we summarise existing knowledge regarding the biology and ecology of the Pacific sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon longurio (Jordan & Hilbert, 1882), a small‐bodied carcharhinid shark found in coastal waters of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean that is of both commercial and ecological importance. We compare ecological parameters of this species with its closest extant relatives and identify major knowledge gaps and avenues for future research. In particular, additional studies investigating the behavioural and sensory ecology, as well as potential migratory patterns of the species are needed. Such studies will not only improve our understanding of R. longurio, but provide insight into the extent to which the numerous studies performed on a close relative—Rhizoprionodon terraenovae—provide an accurate representation of the biology and ecology of Rhizoprionodon and carcharhinids more generally.

Elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) exhibit a wide range of body forms adapted to various ecological niches. Body form differs not only between species, but between life stages of individual species as a result of ontogenetic allometry. In sharks, it has been proposed that these ontogenetic shifts in body form result from shifts in trophic and/or spatial ecology (the allometric niche shift hypothesis). Alternatively, it has been suggested that ontogenetic allometry may result from intrinsic morphological constraints associated with increasing body size, e.g. to counteract shifts in form-function relationships that occur as a function of size and could compromise locomotory performance. One major limitation affecting our understanding of ontogenetic scaling in sharks is that existing studies focus on postpartum ontogeny, ignoring the period of growth that occurs prior to birth/hatching. In this study, we report ontogenetic growth trajectories from 39 near-term brown smooth hound (Mustelus henlei) embryos taken from manually collected measurements. We found that unlike most other species and later ontogenetic stages of M. henlei, these embryos predominantly grow isometrically, and appear to display relatively high levels of morphological disparity. These results provide rudimentary support for the allometric niche shift hypothesis (as in the absence of ontogenetic niche shifts isometry dominates body-form scaling) and provide important insight into early shark ontogeny and morphological/developmental evolution.
