First Determination of the Distance and Fundamental Properties of an Eclipsing Binary in the Andromeda Galaxy

Abstract: We present the first detailed spectroscopic and photometric analysis of an eclipsing binary in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). This is a 19.3 mag semidetached system with late O and early B spectral type components. From the light and radial velocity curves we have carried out an accurate determination of the masses and radii of the components. Their effective temperatures have been estimated by modeling the absorption-line spectra. The analysis yields an essentially complete picture of the properties of the syste… Show more

“…These results are again consistent with previous studies (Stanek & Garnavich 1998;Ribas et al 2005;Vilardell et al 2006Vilardell et al , 2010Riess et al 2012;Valls-Gabaud 2013). The values of mean distance modulus for M31 Cepheids obtained using both Galaxy and LMC as calibrators are given in Table 11.…”

“…Hilditch et al 2005;North et al 2010). Finally, spectroscopy and radial velocities of several EBs in the Andromeda Galaxy (Ribas et al 2005;Vilardell et al 2010a,b) and M33 (Bonanos et al 2006) were obtained, indicating the distance modulus fully compatible with other findings.…”

“…To our knowledge this is the first use of multi-object A&A 520, A74 (2010) spectroscopy in the field of extragalactic EBs. Recently, even the distance to large spiral galaxies were measured on the basis of two EBs in M31 (Ribas et al 2005;Vilardell et al 2010) and one in M 33 (Bonanos et al 2006).…”
