First Direct Measurement of an Astrophysical p -Process Reaction Cross Section Using a Radioactive Ion Beam

Abstract: We have performed the first direct measurement of the 83 Rbðp; γÞ radiative capture reaction cross section in inverse kinematics using a radioactive beam of 83 Rb at incident energies of 2.4 and 2.7A MeV. The measured cross section at an effective relative kinetic energy of E cm ¼ 2.393 MeV, which lies within the relevant energy window for core collapse supernovae, is smaller than the prediction of statistical model calculations. This leads to the abundance of 84 Sr produced in the astrophysical p process bein… Show more

“…In particular, the first approved investigation will be the 15 O(α,α) 15 O nuclear reaction. This is a direct way to measure the alpha widths of the 19 Ne nucleus that is formed by the 18 F(p,α) 15 N reaction which plays a central role in novae explosions [48]. Precise knowledge of the alpha widths is crucial to reduce reaction rate uncertainties [49], but limitations in energy resolutions have hampered investigations.…”

“…Direct measurements of the inverse p-process reactions with total absorption spectrometers at the University of Notre Dame have constrained properties of p-process nuclei near A = 100 [264,265], and measurements combining γ-spectroscopy and activation techniques performed at the University of Cologne and ATOMKI have focused on heavier p-process nuclei [266,267]. Measurements on unstable nuclei involved in p-process nucleosynthesis have recently become possible with novel recoil separation techniques, such as the EMMA separator at TRIUMF [268] and the ESR storage ring at GSI [269].…”
