First Eurados Intercomparison Exercise of Eye Lens Dosemeters for Medical Applications

Abstract: In the context of the decrease in the eye lens dose limit for occupational exposure to 20 mSv per year stated by the recent revision of the European Basic Safety Standards Directive 2013/59/EURATOM, the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has organised in 2014, for the first time, an intercomparison exercise for eye lens dosemeters. The main objective was to assess the capabilities of the passive eye lens dosemeters currently in use in Europe for occupational monitoring in medical fields. A total of 2… Show more

“…The staff participating in this study used a new dedicated direct eye lens dosimeter (eye dosimeter), the DOSIRIS ™ (IRSN, France), which specifically measures the eye lens dose [Hp(3)] 12 . The eye dosimeter consists of a thermoluminescent dosimeter sensor ( 7 LiF:Mg, Ti), plastic capsule, and adjustable headset.…”

“…The personal dose equivalent H p (3) was measured using the UPC eye lens dosemeter, as described in Principi et al [21]. The performance of the dosemeter in realistic fields was verified through the results of the EURADOS intercomparison exercise of eye lens dosemeters [22]. Two dosemeters were assigned to each operator.…”

“…Recently, several important initiatives were undertaken to develop eye lens dosemeters calibrated in terms of Hp (3). Generally they employ a thermoluminescent chip as passive dosemeter and some material covering it to mimic the necessary thickness to assure the coherence with the respective quantity definition [30,[32][33][34]. All these new devices should conform to suitable calibration procedures and type tests [29].…”
