First extraction of the Λ polarizing fragmentation function from Belle e+e data

Abstract: We present a thorough phenomenological analysis of the experimental data from Belle Collaboration for the transverse Λ andΛ polarization, measured in e þ e − annihilation processes, for the case of associated (with a light charged hadron) and inclusive (plus a jet) production. Within a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) approach we show how this intriguing phenomenon can be accounted for. This allows for the first ever extraction of the quark polarizing fragmentation function for a Λ hyperon, a TMD distributi… Show more

“…Moreover, by employing a Gaussian ansatz for the transverse momentum dependence of the TMD-FFs, we have obtained simple expressions for the structure functions, useful in phenomenological analyses. In particular, we have re-derived the explicit formula for the single transverse polarization of spin-1/2 hadron production in e + e − → h ↑ 1 h 2 +X processes, which has allowed for the first ever extraction of the polarizing FF for Λ hyperons from Belle data [28].…”

“…The motivations behind this study are several: from the theory point of view, it represents the extension to spin-1/2 hadrons of the helicity formalism and the classification of all leading-twist quark and gluon TMD-FFs, focusing, for quarks, on their role in polarized hadron production in e + e − collisions; on the phenomenology side, it timely matches the renewed interest, triggered by recent data from the Belle Collaboration on the transverse Λ polarization [27], in the associate hadron production in e + e − annihilation processes. In this context, indeed, the first phenomenological analysis within a TMD framework has been carried out [28] (see also ref. [29] for a similar study).…”

“…A rather straightforward example of this strategy will be the combined analysis of the BELLE measurements of the polarization of Λ hyperons [17] in e + e − → Λπ(K )X processes (2-h class), already studied in Ref. [21] within a generalized-parton model approach, and in e + e − → ΛX , i.e. in a 1h-class process.…”

“…This function can be responsible, in a TMD approach, for the large transverse polarization of Λ hyperons inclusively produced in unpolarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions [15], measured since the late 70s and still waiting a clear explanation in perturbative QCD and, more recently, in e + e − annihilations (see, e.g., Ref. [16]).…”
