“…The MFS of sequence TR6 is placed at a Si/Al minimum corresponding with the highest measured C org values of the studied succession ( Figure 6). The high C org contents are associated with the lower Aptian Fischschiefer; a paper shale horizon that is often interpreted as local expression of the global OAE 1a (Bottini and Mutterlose, 2012;Heldt et al, 2012). The overall transgressive nature of the lower Aptian has been previously described and is mirrored in the LSB, among other things, by sandy-silty sediments in the north-western Teutoburger Wald (Mutterlose and Bornemann, 2000).…”

“…Negative δ 13 C values have previously been documented for the lower Barremian Hauptblätterton and are interpreted to reflect a regional or diagenetic signal in the semi-restricted LSB Pauly et al, 2013). This paper shale horizon is often interpreted as local expression of the global OAE 1a (Bottini and Mutterlose, 2012;Heldt et al, 2012), which is characterized by widespread deposition of organic-rich shales. “…The global carbon isotope record of the early Aptian shows a marked negative δ 13 C excursion of as much as 3‰ in marine carbonates and ~4‰-5‰ in OC, followed by a stepwise increase of ~3‰-4‰ in the δ 13 C record of marine carbonate (δ 13 C carb ) and ~5‰-6‰ in δ 13 C of bulk organic matter (δ 13 C org ). (e.g., Menegatti et al, 1998;Erba et al, 1999;Herrle et al, 2004Herrle et al, , 2015Heldt et al, 2012;Bottini et al, 2015, and references therein). The former is thought to reflect an influx of 13 C-depleted carbon into the ocean-atmosphere reservoir from volcanic sources linked to the emplacement of the Ontong-Java Plateau (Menegatti et al, 1998;Méhay et al, 2009;Tejada et al, 2009) and/or dissociation of methane clathrates (Jahren et al, 2001;Beerling et al, 2002), while the latter has been linked to sequestration of 12 C into marine sediments via globally enhanced burial of OC (e.g., Weissert et al, 1998).…”

“…This defi nition has been used in various works (e.g., Ando et al, 2008;Kuhnt et al, 2011;Keller et al, 2011). Other studies (e.g., Erba et al, , 2010Heldt et al, 2012) place the onset of the OAE 1a at the base of the negative shift (segment C3) where the fi rst organic-rich black shales are encountered. The top of the OAE 1a is placed in the lowermost part of segment C7.…”
