Delineation of stratigraphic sequences and their component systems tracts in mud-stone-dominated successions is challenging due to the relatively homogenous, finegrained nature of the strata. High-resolution elemental intensity data from X-ray fluorescence core scanning is used in order to develop a sequence stratigraphic framework for the Lower Cretaceous monotonous mudstone succession in the eastern Lower Saxony Basin. The study is based on four drill cores covering the Berriasian to Aptian interval. In addition, carbon isotope (δ 13 C org ), grain size and CaCO 3 analyses were carried out on discrete samples. The studied cores represent both proximal and distal basinal environments of the eastern Lower Saxony Basin and can be reliably correlated by utilizing variations in selected X-ray flourescence elemental ratios, K/Ti data have proven to be particularly suitable in this regard. The core correlation shows that chemostratigraphic variability within the studied succession is laterally reproducible in the eastern Lower Saxony Basin, and can be used to establish a sequence stratigraphic framework. Further, Si/Al and Ca/Ti ratios have been applied to characterize the cores in terms of variation in grain size and CaCO 3 content, respectively. Vertical grading trends inferred from Si/Al changes were used to identify transgressive and regressive systems tracts within the studied succession. An important regression in the uppermost lower Valanginian coincides with the onset of the Valanginian Weissert Event, as indicated by the well-known positive δ 13 C shift, and, thus, supports the idea that the initial interval of this event corresponds to enhanced supply of terrigenous material. The results of this study are also in agreement with previously recognized transgressive-regressive trends in the Lower Saxony Basin and adjacent areas. This clearly shows that systematic geochemical variations recorded in mudstone-dominated basinal settings are suitable to establish sequence stratigraphic frameworks. The Early Cretaceous oceanic anoxic event (OAE) 1a documents a major perturbation of the global carbon cycle with severe consequences for the ocean-climate-biosphere system. While numerous studies over the past decades have provided a relatively detailed picture of the environmental repercussions of OAE 1a at low and mid-latitudes, studies from high latitudes, in particular the High Arctic, are limited. In this study, we present a high-resolution carbon isotopic and sequence stratigraphic framework for the lower to lower upper Aptian interval of the Isachsen Formation of the High Arctic Sverdrup Basin (Canada). These data enable us to precisely locate the stratigraphic position of OAE 1a in a deltaic sedimentary environment. The carbon isotope record allows, for the first time, identification of the different carbon isotope segments (CISs) of OAE 1a in the Sverdrup Basin and thereby correlation of the High Arctic record with sections from lower latitudes. Based on this improved chemostratigraphy, we revise the age of upper Paterson Island, Rondon, and Walker Island Members, important regional lithostratigraphic marker units. Whole-rock geochemical data record two episodes of marine incursion into the Sverdrup Basin during OAE 1a (CISs Ap3 and Ap6), which are interpreted as regional maximum flooding surfaces. This information is used in conjunction with detailed sedimentological logs and geochemical grain-size proxies to refine the sequence stratigraphic framework for the upper Isachsen Formation. We propose that transgressive-regressive cycles in the Sverdrup Basin were controlled mainly by the combined effects of eustatic sea-level changes and regional tectonic uplift, potentially related to the emplacement of Alpha Ridge, which culminated at ca. 122 Ma during CIS Ap9.

The early Aptian was characterized by the widespread occurrence of anoxia in the oceans, known as Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a. Intense degassing from submarine volcanic plateaus presumably resulted in high atmospheric CO 2 concentrations, culminating in greenhouse conditions. OAE 1a can, therefore, be considered as a past "natural experiment" important to understand the future evolution of our climate. Paleotemperature estimates for OAE 1a are, however, predominantly based on bulk oxygen isotopes, which are susceptible to diagenetic overprinting, while TEX 86 paleotemperature estimates are limited in number or derived from stratigraphically poorly constrained sections. Here we reconstructed for the fi rst time sea-surface water temperatures (SSTs) based on the TEX 86 paleothermometer from an OAE 1a section from the middle northern latitudes (39°N paleolatitude). We fi nd a SST rise starting prior to OAE 1a and reaching a maximum during the event, with SSTs of ~31-34 °C, 4-9 °C higher than those of older Hauterivian-lower Aptian sediments from the same sedimentary basin. The end of OAE 1a is marked by relatively lower SSTs of ~30 °C. These observations are supported by belemnite-based oxygen-isotope (δ 18 O Bel ) data and calcareous nannofossils. Our integrated data set clearly indicates that "super greenhouse" conditions prevailed during OAE 1a at northern latitudes. SSTs are similar to those estimated for coeval low-latitudinal sites, suggesting that an equable warm climate, with reduced latitudinal gradients, characterized the early Aptian.
