First Isolation and Characterization of Streptococcus agalactiae From a Stranded Wild Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis)

Abstract: Streptococcosis is an infectious bacterial disease of both homeotherms and poikilotherms. Among the Streptococcus species that infect marine animals, Streptococcus agalactiae has the broadest host spectrum, including different aquatic organisms in freshwater and marine environments. The common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is categorized as Endangered in the Mediterranean Sea. There are few reports of a streptococcal infection of D. delphis, caused by Streptococcus phocae and Streptococcus iniae. Here we report … Show more

“…The etiological agent which has been associated with piscine lactococcosis is Lactococcus garvieae (Bwalya et al, 2020b; Nishiki et al, 2016; Ortega et al, 2020; Rao et al, 2021). This bacterium infects a wide range of animal hosts (Evans et al, 2006; Kawanishi et al, 2006; Morick et al, 2022; Pot et al, 1996; Teixeira et al, 1996; Tejedor et al, 2011; Thiry et al, 2021) and is also considered as a potential foodborne zoonotic agent with clinical significance for humans (Chan et al, 2011; Russo et al, 2012; Wang et al, 2007).…”
