First lay-down heliostat with monolithic mirror-panel, closed loop control, and cleaning system

Abstract: The first lay-down heliostat with monolithic concentrator was erected at the Solar Tower Jülich. The main components and their main features are described: azimuth and elevation drive, concentrator, control, and the cleaning system concept. The dimensions of the elevation drive and the carriage already match the requirements of a 50 m² heliostat that shall be developed in a follow-up project.SolarPACES 2018 AIP Conf.

“…The wiper lip is fixed on a bearing in the center of the heliostat. For heliostats with approximately round concentrators (with common vertical primary axis) it is 372 possible to realize a wiper cleaning system which is driven by the azimuth drive [54]. The concept is 373 illustrated in Fig.…”

“…At SolarPACES 2017, a carousel heliostat concept of extraordinary low cost was presented [6]. A first prototype of reduced scale was built and tested [7] (Fig 2 (a)). With additional innovations in detail, the cost can be further significantly reduced (Fig.…”

“…The unevenness of the ground and possible slippage are compensated by the closed-loop control. The control is based on a camera chip with fish-eye optics placed on the concentrator of each heliostat [6] [7]. The control strategy for a heliostat with two steered wheels (Fig.…”

“…Six years later, at SolarPACES 2017, a heliostat concept was proposed already in close reach to this benchmark [2]. First tests validated the technology concept [3]. Now, with the presented further innovations in certain parts of the design, the cost target seems to be well achievable.…”
