“…Additional spectral bands provided by the ABI will lead to new applications of geostationary-based, multispectral imagery. In preparation, SPoRT has presented current forecasters with imagery and products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's polar-orbiting Terra and Aqua satellites, and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS, Hillger et al 2013) aboard S-NPP. The greater number of spectral bands on MODIS and VIIRS compared to GOES-13 and GOES-15 allows for demonstration of applications from the future GOES-R and JPSS series imagers.…”

“…Located aboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP), VIIRS is a 22-band scanning radiometer with a nominal spatial resolution of 375 m in the five imagery bands (I-bands) and 750 m in both the 16 moderate resolution bands (M-bands) and the DNB (Cao et al, 2014;Wolfe et al, 2013;Schroeder et al, 2014;Csiszar et al, 2013). The sensor data records (SDR) of calibrated radiances and BTs cover a spectral range from 0.411 µm to 11.87 µm and are used in a wide range of Earth observation applications including fire detection and characterization, retrieval of cloud and aerosol properties, and land and sea surface temperature estimation (Hillger et al, 2013). The VIIRS sensor was designed to improve upon legacy instruments, such as MODIS, AVHRR, and the OLS.…”

“…Riding on board the Suomi National Polar Orbiting Partnership ( S-NPP) satellite, VIIRS uses knowledge and technology gained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the Operational Linescan System (OLS), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( MODIS) [Hillger et al, 2013]. It provides data in 21 traditional spectral bands (ranging from visible to 12 micrometer infrared wavelengths) along with the DNB.…”
