First mass spectrometric detection of boldenone in horse mane samples

Abstract: SummaryIn order to investigate the detection of boldenone in horse mane samples, a boldenone study was conducted on f,,vo horses. The analytical procedure consisted in a hydrolysis using the Sorensen buffer, a liquid-liquid extraction using diethyl ether and a PFPA derivatization. The instrumental method was a gas chromatography sequential mass spectrometry performed on an ion trap instrument in full scan mode. The limit of detection was estimated to 1 pg mg 1.The detection of boldenone in the mane was made po… Show more

“…Testosterone was better detected in mane than in tail samples. The same observation was seen before for the detection of boldenone [15]. Testosterone was not detected in mane and tail samples n6 collected 6 months after administration.…”

“…Regarding steroid analysis in horse hair samples, boldenone was detected in the mane and tail retrospectively for up to 12 months after boldenone undecylenate administration to two different horses [15]. As recently showed by Anielski et al [16] and Popot et al [17], testosterone has been detected in mane and tail samples from a stallion but was not detected in hair of a gelding before administration of testosterone enanthate.…”

“…Very recently, it was shown that ␤-Bol could be detected in horse mane samples even up to 12 months following administration using a GC-MS n approach [9]. However, in many cases liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) can be a robust, easy and sensitive alternative as shown previously for the anabolic steroids trenbolone [10], stanozolol [11][12][13] and nortestosterone [14].…”

“…In addition, we have developed a sensitive GC-EI/MS/MS technique with ion trap mass spectrometry to detect 17β-Bold (Popot et al, 2003(Popot et al, , 2005 in horse hair samples. Therefore we have adapted the latter procedure for detecting 17α-and 17β-Bold, T and ADD in horse faeces.…”
