First Pediatric Case of Infective Endocarditis Caused by Serratia Liquefaciens

Abstract: Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Serratia liquefaciens has been reported in only 2 adults. We experienced the first pediatric (neonatal) case of IE caused by S. liquefaciens, with mitral valve vegetation 4 days after a palliative heart surgery. This report underscores the importance of treating for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in IE cases until the blood cultures elucidate the details.

“…Serratia spp. is one of such bacteria, which is a genus known to be pathogenic in many animals including insects (Chadwick et al, 1990 ; Ishii et al, 2014 ; Momose et al, 2018 ; Voirol et al, 2018 ). For example, the SM1 strain of S. marcescens was highly toxic to the black-winged termite, Odontotermes formosanus , probably through the production of insecticidal protease and metalloproteinases (Fu et al, 2021 ).…”

“…In humans, the few cases involved mainly hospital‐acquired infections such as pneumonia and urinary tract infection (Fitzgerald et al ; Serruys‐Schoutens et al ). Serratia liquefaciens has also been implicated in severe human infections, including infective endocarditis in infants (Momose et al ) and adults (Chuang et al ) as well as life‐threatening disease such as meningitis and septicaemia (Fitzgerald et al ). However, to our knowledge, this is the first documented detection of S. liquefaciens in commercial pigs.…”

“…Serratia liquefaciens is one of the opportunistic pathogens that widely exited in the environment and it is the major cause of Serratia infections which can lead bacteremia, respiratory tract infection, pneumonia and a series of other diseases [1,2]. In recent years, Serratia liquefaciens has developed high resistance to currently available antibiotics, such as Penicillin, and more and more multidrug-resistant strainswere also found [3,4].…”
