This is the first report of morphological anomaly in embryos of Zapteryx brevirostris (Lesser guitarfish), a very common species in Brazil. The gills were absent, and the pectoral fins were not fully formed nor were they completely fused to the head. They were asymmetrical, with the larger left pectoral fin projecting more toward the head (almost at the height of the eyes). The pelvic fin was absent, making sexing impossible. The cause of the morphological deformity is uncertain, although a nutritional problem of the embryo is evoked. Este é o primeiro relato de anomalias morfológicas em embriões de Zapteryx brevirostris, espécie comum no Brasil. As brânquias estiveram ausentes, e as nadadeiras peitorais mostraram-se assimétri-cas e não totalmente formadas e fundidas à cabeça. A nadadeira esquerda, a maior, se projetou destacadamente em direção à cabeça, quase alcançando a altura dos olhos. A nadadeira pélvica esteve ausente, não foi possível a determinação do sexo do animal. A causa da deformidade morfológica é incerta, mas sugere-se que possa estar relacionada a problema nutricional durante o desenvolvimento do embrião. AbstrAct

During three sampling trips carried out over the continental platform of the Gulf of Tehuantepec 15 free-ranging specimens and 3 embryos with morphological abnormalities were collected. Abnormalities consisted of developed pectoral fins that were not fused interiorly, pectoral fins that were not completely developed, anophthalmy, absence of a clasper, an abnormally developed liver, and neoplasia of the liver. Eighty-three percent of specimens were captured relatively close to each other, in waters adjacent to the estuaries of the lagoon systems of La Joya-Buenavista, Carretas-Pereyra and Chantuto-Panzacola, at a depth of between 29.0 and 33.0 m. The presence of organochlorines in the region is a probable cause of morphological abnormalities.

Background: Malformations of the Round stingray Urobatis hallerii, Cooper 1863 captured off the southwestern coast of Baja California Sur, México are reported in this study. Methods: The ray was an adult male captured by artisanal fishery in the area of Estero Banderitas. Size measurements of total length and disk width were taken; the organism could be photographed when captured. Results: Malformations of U. hallerii were found in the posterior part of the spine, a distortion in the upper part of the tail and in the left fin close to the tail. The specimen was considered able to reach the adult size usually reported in other specimens of this species despite the spine malformations because of its benthic habits and not losing its mobility completely. Conclusions: The observed malformations were likely due to genetic alterations although other studies are needed to see if other environmental factors could cause malformations in marine organisms mainly in fish and elasmobranchs.
