First record of Cochlodinium convolutum and C. helicoides (Gymnodiniales: Dinophyceae) in the Gulf of California

Abstract: Abstract.-The naked marine dinoflagellates Cochlodinium convolutum and C. helicoides are reported for the first time in the Gulf of California. They occurred in seawater at 21-24.5°C. Cochlodinium convolutum was found in both bottle and net samples; its abundance ranged from 400-2200 cells L -1 . A total of 96 specimens of C. convolutum and 23 specimens of C. helicoides were examined from the net phytoplankton samples. A short description is given for each species, and photomicrographs provide information abou… Show more

“…In the Mediterranean Sea among these red tide forming species, another species of Spatulodinium has been found based on DNA analysis [73]. In the Mediterranean Sea, Spatulodinium showes a wide range of temperature preference, similar to the temperature range (19-30 • C) reported in the Mexican Pacific [74]. Both N. scintillans and S. pseudonoctiluca have been considered exclusively heterotrophic and inclusion of diatoms, dinoflagellates, and dictyochophytes have been observed in their cells [74].…”

“…Naked dinoflagellates that form red tides have only recently received attention (Gárate-Lizárraga et al, 2004;, 2009a. Many of these have been underestimated because they are normally deformed or destroyed by sampling nets, storage, and by traditional preservation solutions used in routine phytoplankton sampling (Okolodkov & Gárate-Lizárraga, 2006;Gárate-Lizárraga et al, 2011).…”
