First record of Eucinostomus melanopterus, Bleeker 1863 (Perciformes, Gerreidae) from the Río de la Plata estuary

Abstract: Summary We established the presence of Eucinostomus at the Río de la Plata Estuary (36°17′74′′S–56°46′68′′W). The report is based on specimen of 191.6 mm. total length, captured in shallow, warm and brackish water with sandy bottom. This is southernmost record for the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, and appears related with an event of low discharge of the Río de la Plata.

“…This behavior is similar to that described for Argentina for the northern warm current whereby the volume of freshwater discharge at the mouth of the Río de la Plata has not been a significant zoogeographic barrier to the passage of thermophilic forms as proposed in Solari et al. ().…”

“…The previous single reference for this species in Argentine waters was reported by Solari et al. (); they explained the presence of E. melanopterus in the southern Río de la Plata on April 2008 based on the long period of minimum freshwater discharge, which could have allowed the advection of marine waters from the southern Brazilian continental shelf to Río de la Plata and thus explain the presence of E. melanopterus in its southern portion. According to Solari et al.…”

“…The occasional presences of tropical and subtropical fishes in Argentinean waters are well documented in the literature (Cousseau and Figueroa, 1989;Díaz de Astarloa and Figueroa, 1995;Díaz de Astarloa et al, 2000;Figueroa et al, 2000;Rico and Acha, 2003;Scenna et al, 2006;Solari et al, 2010;Spath et al, 2012;Delpiani et al, 2013). The Argentinean marine biogeographic province (Briggs and Bowen, 2012) is characterized by the encounter between the warm, southward-flowing Brazilian Current, and the cold, northward flow, of the Malvinas Current (Figueroa et al, 1998) and water discharge of continental output (Lucas et al, 2005).…”
