First Record of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Causing Anthracnose of Banana in Pakistan

Abstract: Banana (Musa spp.) is one of the most widely grown and consumed fruits in Pakistan and all around the world due to their distinct aroma and taste. In 2018, anthracnose symptoms were observed on banana fruit harvested from different plantations of Sindh- a major banana producing Province of Pakistan. “…Due to its strong environmental adaptability, the Colletotrichum species can cause leaf spot and fruit diseases with huge losses in agricultural and forestry production worldwide [21,65,[73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82]. Furthermore, changes in the climate, human activities, and other factors may cause fungi host jumping within the plants in the nursery [83].…”

“…C. gloeosporioides was identified in the symptomless banana leaves in Malaysia and Hong Kong (Brown et al, 1998;Zhou et al, 2002;Zakaria & Aziz, 2018). In addition, these fungi will induce anthracnose, which developed a brown to reddish spot on the surface of the banana fruit and gave a latent fruit infection (Riera et al, 2019;Alam et al, 2021). Aspergillus sp.…”
