The belemnites (Belemnitida) belong to an extinct order of squid-like cephalopods that existed from the Late Triassic to Late Cretaceous; they originated in eastern Tethys and western Paleo-Pacific in the Late Triassic (Iba et al., 2012) and spread worldwide during the Late Mesozoic (Doyle et al., 1994).
