First recording of the non-native species Beroe ovata Mayer 1912 in the Aegean Sea

Abstract: A new alien species Beroe ovata Mayer 1912 was recorded in the Aegean Sea. It is most likely that this species spread on the currents from the Black Sea. Beroe ovata is also alien to the Black Sea, where it was introduced in ballast waters from the Atlantic coastal area of the northern America. The species is established in the Black Sea and has decreased the population of another invaderMnemiopsis leidyi, which has favoured the recovery of the Black Sea ecosystem. We compare a new 1 species with the native spe… Show more

“…Its predator Beroe ovata followed the same path and arrived in the Aegean Sea (SHIGANOVA et al, 2007). Among the three alien ctenophore species in the entire Mediterranean Sea, Sulculeolaria angusta was found only in the Egyptian coasts (ZAKARIA, 2006).…”

“…In the northern Aegean Sea, two B. ovata individuals were collected from swarms of M. leidyi in the northern Evvoikos Gulf in November 2004 (Shiganova et al, 2007). B. ovata has not been observed to impact M. leidyi populations in the region, probably due to low concentrations of M. leidyi or a lack of observations.…”

“…It is interesting to note the finding of Beroe ovata, one of the worst Invasive Alien Species (IAS) in the Black Sea, now having been recorded from the South Aegean Sea (SHIGANOVA et al, 2007). The three copepods species, namely Acartia hasanii, Paracartia ioannae and Paracartia janetae (ÜNAL et al, 2002) that were excluded from the 'annotated list', as unsupported records, retain their excluded status.…”
