“…Mnemiopsis leidyi is reported in the western Mediterranean mainly in coastal waters (Boero et al, 2009;Fuentes et al, 2010), but the most recent observations include transitional environments, such as lagoons (Marambio et al, 2013;Thibault et al, 2014). The presence of M. leidyi in the S'Ena Arrubia Lagoon represents the first report in Sardinia and the first report of the species in a transitional ecosystem along the Italian coasts.…”

“…Since the 2000s, the species was detected in the central and western Mediterranean: Adriatic Sea (Marambio et al, 2013). In Italy, the species was recorded in Ligurian, Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas (Boero et al, 2009). According to Ghabooli et al, (2013), genetic divergence suggests a further colonization route from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea (Ivanov et al, 2000), as well as a third direct pattern, started in 2006, from north western Atlantic to the Baltic Sea (Reusch et al, 2010;Ghabooli et al, 2011).…”

“…Mnemiopsis leidyi had been sporadically ob served in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (Kideys & Niermann 1994), but only recently have blooms spread across the entire Mediterranean region, from Israel to Spain (Boero et al 2009, Fuentes et al 2010, suggesting a considerable lag time from first introduction to population growth in this region.…”

“…In 1999, M. leidyi was transported from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea (Ivanov et al, 2000). M. leidyi spread from the eastern Mediterranean to other regions of the Mediterranean: it was recorded in 2005 in the northern Adriatic Sea (Shiganova and Malej, 2009) and in 2009, blooms were reported in waters off the coasts of Israel (Galil et al, 2009), Italy (Boero et al, 2009), and Spain (Fuentes et al, 2010).…”
