First report of carbapenem-resistant Providencia stuartii in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: We present the case of 31-year-old man who developed hospital-acquired pneumonia in the intensive care unit. Pathogens were identified to be carbapenem-resistant isolates of Providencia stuartii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The patient was treated with an extended infusion of double-dose meropenem (targeting the carbapenem-resistant P. stuartii) and colistin (targeting the carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae) for 2 weeks. The patient's disease responded well to the prescribed regimen; his chest X-ray became norma… Show more

“…Potential endogenous infectious with P. Stuartii was detected from tracheal aspirates, urine, and blood. P. Stuartii is among the most common causes of nosocomial urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and wound and bloodstream infections that end with severe patients' outcomes [73][74][75]. P. Stuartii survives well in natural environment and often causes opportunistic infection in residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs).…”

“… 1 Notably, P. stuartii is a rare opportunistic organism that causes healthcare-associated infections, such as acute enteric infection, urinary tract infection, and lung diseases. 2 The organism is typically isolated from human secretions, including urine, sputum, blood, stool, and wound cultures. The treatment of choice is based on antibiotic sensitivities, infection source, and comorbid conditions.…”

“…It displays intrinsic resistance to polymyxins, nitrofurans, sulfamethoxazole, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides ( 3 ). Outbreaks of carbapenem-resistant P. stuartii have been reported in intensive care units in Brazil ( 4 ), Greece ( 5 ), and Saudi Arabia ( 6 ). Here, we present the draft genome sequence of the first New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM-1)-positive P. stuartii isolate reported in Peru.…”
