First Report of ‘Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum’ in Carrot in France

Abstract: In summer 2012, carrot (Daucus carota L.) plants displaying symptoms of leaf yellowing, stunting and proliferation of dwarfed shoots with bushy tops, and a dense hairy growth of secondary roots were observed. Symptomatic carrots were collected from three fields used for seed production and located in Region Centre of France near Orléans. The presence of psyllids (Psyllidae) in one of the fields was reported but they were not clearly identified. Fifty percent of the field was infected. Due to a large amount of … Show more

“…Recently, Lso has also caused severe carrot crop losses in several locations in the Mediterranean as well as in Germany (Alfaro-Fernández et al, 2012a;Loiseau et al, 2014;Tahzima et al, 2014;Teresani et al, 2014;Munyaneza et al, 2015). Two different psyllid species have been reported so far as vectors of Lso in carrots: Trioza apicalis Foerster in northern Europe (Munyaneza et al, 2010b;Nissinen et al, 2014;Munyaneza et al, 2015b) and Bactericera trigonica Hodkinson in the Mediterranean region (Alfaro-Fernández et al, 2012b).…”

Symptoms of Lso in carrot and celery include abnormal proliferation of shoots, stem curling as well as purple or yellow discoloration and root size reduction.…”

“…However so far 'Ca. L. solanacearum' has been only reported in carrots in France, Finland, Norway and Spain (Munyaneza et al, 2010a;Alfaro-Fernández et al, 2012a;EPPO, 2013;Loiseau et al, 2014). It was also detected in celery grown next to carrot in Spain, suggesting that carrot was the most probable source of inoculum (Teresani et al, 2014a).…”
