First Report of Peanut mottle virus Infecting Soybean in South Korea

Abstract: In July 2013, soybean (Glycine max) plants at the research field in Daegu, South Korea, showed virus-like symptoms, such as mosaic, mottle, yellowing, and stunting. Overall, there were approximately 1% of soybean plants that showed these symptoms. Sixteen soybean samples were collected based on visual symptoms and subjected to laboratory characterization. Total RNA was extracted from each sample with the Tri Reagent (Molecular Research Center, Cincinnati, OH) and cDNA was synthesized using random N25 primer wi… Show more

“…Based on previous reports, four viruses— Peanut stunt virus (PSV) in the genus Cucumovirus , SMV, SYMMV, and SYCMV—have been frequently identified in Korea [ 7 , 8 ]. Moreover, infection of Peanut mottle virus (PeMoV), which is a member of the genus Potyvirus in the family Potyviridae , infecting soybean in the Republic of Korea has been previously reported [ 11 ].…”

“…Since its discovery, SVNV has been reported on soybean in many states in the USA, Canada, and Egypt [ 15 19 ]. There are also reports of well-known viruses such as peanut mottle virus (PeMoV) [ 20 ], bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) [ 21 ], and bean common mosaic virus [ 22 ], associated with soybean diseases in the field. Of particular interest is clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), a potyvirus that is primarily known to cause important diseases in forage legumes [ 23 ].…”

“…To date, 12 viruses, Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Soybean dwarf virus (SbDV), Soybean mosaic virus (SMV), Soybean yellow common mosaic virus (SYCMV), Soybean yellow mottle virus (SYMMV), Peanut mottle virus (PeMoV), Peanut stunt virus (PSV), and Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), have been reported to infect in soybean and azuki bean in Korea (Kim, 2006;Lee et al, 2013Lee et al, , 2015Nam et al, 2009Nam et al, , 2012. Among these 12 viruses, three viruses, ClYVV, PeMoV, and TSWV, were recently reported to infect soybean, and two viruses, PeMoV and TSWV, were reported to infect red bean (Lim et al, 2014;Shin et al, 2014;Yoon et al, 2018).…”
