First Report of Phytophthora cambivora Causing Bleeding Cankers and Dieback on Beech (Fagus sylvatica) in Italy

Abstract: European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is an important forest tree species common in northern and central Europe. In Italy, this species is typical in mountain areas over 1,000 m above sea level. In the last decade, decline and death was reported on European beech caused by several Phytophthora species (2), and P. pseudosyringae was recently reported in Italy (3). During 2004 and 2005, seven declining and dying F. sylvatica trees, older than 20 years, were observed in the Veneto Region of Italy with symptoms of blee… Show more

“…During the last decade, the involvement of Phytophthora species in the decline and mortality of fagaeceous trees has been demonstrated to occur throughout beech-and/or oak-dominated forest ecosystems of Europe (Balci and Halmschlager 2003a, Balci and Halmschlager 2003b, Belisario et al 2006, Brown and Brasier 2007, Moreira and Martins 2005, Jönsson et al 2005, Jung 2009, Motta and Annesi. 2003, Vettraino 2002 and N. “…Later reports on these pathogenic organisms came from Germany (Jung and Blaschke 1996), where damages by P. cambivora and P. citricola (nowadays P. plurivora) were observed. During the last 10 years the phenomenon associated with beech weakening and decline due to Phytophthora pathogens has been observed throughout entire Europe (Balci and Halmschlager 2003;Motta et al 2003;Cech and Jung 2005;Jung et al 2005;Belisario et al 2006;Diana et al 2006;Brown and Brasier 2007;Denman et al 2007;Munda et al 2007;Schmitz et al 2007). So far, P. cactorum has been most frequently isolated from exudates appearing on beech trunks (Belisario et.…”
