First Report of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola Causing Bacterial Leaf Streak of Rice in Burundi

Abstract: On May 9, 2013, symptoms reminiscent of bacterial leaf streak (BLS) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola were observed on rice plants at the panicle emergence stage at Musenyi, Gihanga, and Rugombo fields in Burundi. Affected leaves showed water-soaked translucent lesions and yellow-brown to black streaks, sometimes with visible exudates on leaf surfaces. Symptomatic leaves were ground in sterile water and the suspensions obtained were subjected to a multiplex PCR assay diagnostic for X. oryzae pathovars… Show more

“…Rice production has increased substantially in West Africa in recent years, but with limited yields and increases in consumption, many countries still rely heavily on foreign imports (http://www.fao.org/3/a-i4337e.pdf). Intensified production and the lack of resistant germplasm has facilitated a rapid spread of BLS to multiple new rice‐growing areas, affecting up to 80% of the plants in fields surveyed (Afolabi et al ., , ; Wonni et al . ).…”

“…BLS was first described in Philippines in 1918 and is prevalent in Asia (16), as well as in Africa in Mali (20) and Burkina Faso (21), and was recently reported in Madagascar (22), Burundi (23), and Uganda (24).…”

“…Individual strains of Xoc and Xoo may deliver as many as two dozen or more different TAL effectors into rice cells during infection, though some (e.g., African Xoo strains) deliver fewer than 10. Bacterial leaf streak constrains rice yields in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, and increasingly elsewhere, including West Africa (Niño-Liu et al, 2006 ; Afolabi et al, 2014a , b ; Poulin et al, 2014 ). Bacterial blight of rice is distributed similarly and in more temperate regions, and in many areas is the single most economically damaging disease of this staple crop (Niño-Liu et al, 2006 ).…”
