First Report of Leaf Spot Disease on Fagopyrum esculentum Caused by Bipolaris zeae in China

Abstract: Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), a dicotyledonous plant in family Polygonaceae, is recognized as a valuable nutritional source of fatty acids, phytosterols, phenolic compounds and tocopherols. It has received increased attention as a so-called “functional food” in China. During scouting of common buckwheat in August and September 2018, unfamiliar symptoms were observed on leaves in 20 fields in Yanchi County, Ningxia, China, with 35% incidence and moderate to high severity across the field. Brow… Show more

“…The morphological characteristics of the conidiophores observed in the maguey plants were like those previously observed and described in PDA medium. The morphological characteristics of the different structures observed and the measurements obtained in this research permitted the identification of the studied strains as new B. zeae records from Mexico [6,11,33]. In addition, these results constitute the first report of this species as a pathogen of A. salmiana plants in the municipality of Apan, Hidalgo, in Mexico.…”

“…Subsequently, the strains were morphologically identified at the macroscopic level, and the PDA medium was used to create the descriptions of microscopic structures. The strain identification was based on the comparisons with other Bipolaris strains [1,5,11,33] and complemented with new observations. Fifty measurements for each trait observed in each isolated species were made to calculate the length and width of the following structures: ascomata, conidiophores, conidia, and the number of dictyosepts per conidia.…”

“…Common buckwheat seeds are rich in protein, fat, starch, vitamin, rutin, mineral elements, and vegetable cellulose, and it has preventive and therapeutic effects on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and constipation [ 3 ]. Therefore, a large number of studies were mainly focused on the biologically active ingredients of buckwheat, such as flavonoids and flavones [ 4 ], phytosterols [ 5 ], and fagopyrins [ 6 ].…”
