First Results of the Application of a Citizen Science-Based Mobile Monitoring System to the Study of Household Heating Emissions

Abstract: This work aims at understanding whether a citizen science-based monitoring system could be adequate to detect the effects, in terms of air quality, of solid and liquid fuel combustion for household heating. Citizen science is known to be able to improve the coverage and resolution of measurements at a very low cost. On the other hand, it also has severe limitations. Since low-cost sensors are to be used, measurements are problematic in terms of precision and accuracy. In order to test these aspects, we develop… Show more

“…To facilitate the local production of daily products, citizen science can help to better connect local producers based on ICT systems [ 85 ]. Monitoring programs can be created within the framework of citizen science to obtain a better understanding of the emissions from heating systems and transport vehicles [ 86 ]. Based on the points shown, citizen science in Mongolia clearly holds a variety of potentials in addressing environmental challenges.…”

“…As a result, numerous citizen initiatives [11][12][13] have been started worldwide. Despite the uncertainties or limitations associated with low-cost sensors, they aim to monitor air quality using low-cost sensor networks independent from governmental or governmentcontracted networks [14].…”

“…Each of them can constitute on their own a topic for a considerable analysis. In previous works [35][36][37][38][39], we have considered some of these aspects and the scientific results that we were able to obtain by exploiting them. Here, we describe the technological aspects of our work in the hope that our experience could prove beneficial to others intending to replicate or eventually improve what we have been able to build so far.…”
